TEN
Steve had gone home and headed straight to bed. Not that it did him much good. He tossed and turned for an hour before slipping into a light doze. His dreams that night were full of the crash that had killed his family. His sisters were crying, his mother was screaming and his father demanded, âWhy didnât you stop me?â
The dream shifted and Joss was in the car, instead. âWhy didnât you save me?â
He jerked out of sleep and tossed aside the covers. It was only four thirteen, but he shook off the sleep-induced fog clinging to him. He would be better off getting an early start than surrendering to the nightmares again.
He hadnât had those dreams in a long time. For some reason, this case was messing him up. It was Hal and Tim. It was seeing an explosion a mere two feet from where he stood.
It was Joss.
He needed action. Striding to the kitchen, he glanced at his phone. And grimaced. Heâd missed three texts. Two from Kathy and one from Melissa. Unlocking his phone, he read them and whistled. A key. Now, that was interesting. He glanced at the time. He couldnât go over yet. It wasnât even five in the morning. He could probably swing by at seven thirty. This was an urgent situation.
And what if they were still asleep?
He scoffed. Nicole, at least, would be up and about by then. If necessary, heâd wait in his car until they were ready. The important thing was to be there, able to hit the ground running, the moment they said the word.
He shot off a quick text to his colleagues. I saw your texts. Iâll be there at seven thirty. Hitting Send, he grabbed a quick glass of milk and gulped it down before heading to the shower. By the time he was shaved and dressed, Melissa had responded.
Weâre all up. Should be ready by then.
Grabbing his keys off the hook on the kitchen wall, he bounced out the door and jogged to his cruiser. For the first time, excitement shuddered through him. The key had to be important or Emily wouldnât have gone to the trouble of hiding it. It seemed significant that Joss didnât recognize it.
One more secret sheâd been keeping.
Hopefully, today those secrets would begin to unravel.
Starting the ignition, he headed to Melissaâs. Darkness shrouded the landscape. A few rays of red and yellow peeked over the horizon. By the time he arrived in the parking lot, the sun had risen, and bright beams lit every edge of the perimeter. Steve backed into a spot that provided a clear view of the front door. He sent another text letting the slumber party participants know he was there. He grinned, when he sent the text, knowing Kathy would grouse at the words slumber party. Sheâd tell him she was too old for such shenanigans, but Kathy was only thirty-four, just three years older than he was.
Movement in the bushes caught his attention. Turning his head, he narrowed his gaze and peered into the thick branches.
